Get Organized
Create More Time for Fitness and Fun
Here's a great fitness tip for everyone: Get organized!
This website is primarily for fitness buffs who are too busy for a traditional gym workout. Most, if not all, of the fitness tips
in here can be done in a reasonably short amount of time.
As convenient as these fitness tips may be, I'm never going to claim that it's easy. In fact, if you're as busy as I am, there
are probably two formidable traps standing in your way.
The first trap is procrastination. It's normal to feel overwhelmed by the daily grind. Often we feel there's just so much stuff we
have to do today, so... I'll start exercising tomorrow.
Tomorrow turns into the next day. Uh, make that next week. Wait a minute, the kitchen needs to be renovated. Next month, then.
Okay, two months...
See where this is going? Start today. Otherwise it'll never happen.
The second trap is clutter. It's very important to get organized. There's no way around this. No ifs, ands, or buts.
If you're anything like my wife Melanie, clutter throws a monkey wrench into your ability to function. You can't get any work done in a messy environment. There's this Feng Shui thing going on in your brain that won't let you accomplish anything if things are messy or out of place.
Yes, I'm making fun of my wife. She put me up to this. This whole page is her idea.
If you're anything like me, you don't care if the dishes aren't done or if there's a pile of laundry sitting on the floor. (Are these
clothes clean or dirty? Can't remember. Gonna have to give it the Sniff Test.) But it doesn't matter. The clutter is going to come
back and bite you in the butt.
I hang my head in shame and admit that Melanie is right. To free up more time to get in an effective workout... get organized. To
free up more time for family and fun... get organized. To eliminate stress and improve the quality of your relationships with others...
get organized. There's just no escaping it.
Yes, I lost a bet with Melanie. She's enjoying every minute of this.
How did I learn my lesson? It was the kettlebells (featured on another page in this website).
In the kettlebells page I bragged how a workout can be done in conjunction with household chores. It really is a win-win situation
for everyone. You can do a set for 30-60 seconds, gather a load of dirty clothes, do another set, dump the clothes in the wash,
do another set, and so on.
What I didn't point out was, sometimes this great idea got derailed by clutter. You wouldn't believe how much time I've wasted
looking for stuff that wasn't where it was supposed to be. This is problematic because I'm a big fan of interval training. That one
minute in between sets often becomes five minutes, ten minutes, or more. For this reason I'm caving in and saying yes, we need to
get organized before we can succeed in anything we do.
Look, I'm a regular guy. This is hard for me to admit. But Melanie took the time to utilize some organizing strategies that made
things go a lot smoother.
When I'm putting the laundry away in between kettlebell sets, for example, I'll open the kids' dressers and know exactly where
everything needs to go. Melanie has actually taken the time to put labels in there. There are all sorts of categories in there.
Look, I have Attention Deficit Disorder. So sue me.
This is only the tip of the iceberg. Our office space is much more organized and I'm able to finish this very page you're reading in
a much faster time frame. Which, in turn, frees me up for a workout in between my writing endeavors and picking up the kids from
school or camp. I can't repeat this enough: Get organized.
Melanie has me converted. And if you want to free up valuable time for yourself, she highly recommends Maria Gracia's Finally
Organized, Finally Free. Over a million people check out her Get Organized Now! website every year and nearly 200,000
people subscribe to her newsletter. Of course, being the Neanderthal that I am, I hadn't heard of Maria Gracia until now. But the
results have already spoken for themselves. I'm convinced.
